Curiosity
ignites a
career path
What
does it take to stimulate a
child's interest in STEM
subjects---to light a spark
that could guide a career? For one local STEM
leader, a simple gift led
to a very successful STEM
career.
Dean Emeritus
of Engineering at the
University of New Orleans,
Dr. Russell Trahan, Jr.,
shares his story of how a
broken train set put his
future profession on course.
Russ had wanted a
train set his entire life.
Then at the age of 10, a
family friend gave him a
used Lionel train set.

Summer Teaching
Training
Creates Classroom Excitement
The
summer after her first year
at Benjamin Franklin
Elementary, MiWha learned
about a professional
development program being
offered by a new
organization, Core Element.
Core Element is a
non-profit organization that
offers successful Science,
Technology, Engineering and
Math (STEM) programs to
teachers in Greater New
Orleans classrooms.
Initially, MiWha did not
think much of the program.
“I
thought the program would be
another boring course that
wouldn’t be relevant to my
teaching,” said MiWha.
“But, within one hour
of seminar, I was totally
blown away.”
With excitement in
her voice, MiWha explained,
“The summer training
simulates exactly how the
program will work in the
classroom.
You are learning
exactly how the students
will learn and the
presenters are modeling how
to teach in a classroom
setting.
I loved that I was
learning from the student’s
prospective.
And I was having tons
of fun!”
