Core Element is a non-profit organization that began in 2006 and is dedicated to promoting quality teaching in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) in the greater New Orleans region. Nationwide, K-12 students are not obtaining proficiency in science and math which is critical in maintaining a solid STEM workforce in our region.
STRIKE for STEM lived up to the event name with 16 bowling teams competing for the Strike for STEM trophy. The coveted team trophy was a golden bedazzled bowling pin. The winning team with an average of 105 per bowler was the PIPE sponsoring team. PIPE team captain, Jan Catalano was thrilled. “PIPE team members showed our competitive spirit by winning the first place trophy. We had great fun and were able to support a great cause.”
PIPE, the presenting sponsor was formed in 2007 by local petroleum societies and organizations to help teachers, students, schools and parents gain an easy access to available resources in energy educatio. Jan Catalano states, “PIPE supports the belief that science and math education are vital to the future growth and success of the overall economic development in the Greater New Orleans region. On Thursday, August 11, the second annual masquerade gala and silent auction sponsored by the Young Professionals Program (YPP) of the Society of Petroleum Engineers - Delta Section was an awe-inspiring success. In order to accommodate last year’s sold-out, capacity crowd, the venue was moved to the Grand Oaks Mansion at Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World. Over 230 attendees enjoyed the live music, food and merriment in the festive setting that blended an incredible ambiance into the event.
YPP gala chair and Baker Hughes employee, Mike
Vial, reported, “we were able to increase our
attendance this year by 15%, but we hit a home
run by donating $26,000 to Core Element.
That is a 30% increase over last year’s
contribution!” The SPE-YPP with the
support of Baker Hughes International generously
agreed to sponsor the gala for the 2nd
year, allowing 100% of proceeds to be donated to
Core Element. |
